Filey Golf Club expects to complete the installatin a 15-metre wind turbine today to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and cut energy bills.
The final stage of the installation, involving lifting the mast and attaching the turbine is scheduled to take place today. The turbine's blades have a diameter of 13 metres.
The golf club's plan to install the wind turbine was approved by North Yorkshire Council on 22 January 2024. The club decided to install the turbine after deeming solar panels less visually appealing and requiring more space.
The project, costing approximately £110,000, was funded through member loans and a £49,950 grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, administered by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. The turbine is situated on the western side of the site, amongst vegetation. This location was chosen after concerns were raised about the originally proposed location on the open golf course.
The project received significant community support, with over 20 residents writing to the council in favour of the turbine. Supporters expressed hopes that the turbine would contribute to renewable energy generation and potentially reduce membership costs.
Filey Town Council, while backing the project, did raise concerns about the turbine's proximity to the railway line and a bridal path. They requested a minimum distance of 25 metres from both. Concerns regarding potential noise impact on nearby residents of a caravan park and a planned housing development were also expressed.
The golf club addressed these concerns by relocating the turbine and choosing a "less intrusive lattice style" design. The council's report noted that the RSPB supports wind power and that the two-blade design, with its slower speed, poses less danger to birds. Planning officers deemed the development necessary to provide renewable energy for the well-established golf club. The council stipulated that the turbine must be removed if not used for electricity generation for over six months, with the site restored to its original condition within three months.
The completed wind turbine installation marks a significant step towards Filey Golf Club's commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact. In addition to the wind turbine, the club has also installed an indoor simulator to allow for coaching during inclement weather providing its members with access to golfing facilities year-round.
