Humberside Police say the misuse of motorbikes, associated anti-social behaviour and vehicle thefts has been highlighted as a concern in the East Riding.
Their Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Jamie Campbell said:
“Whilst Operation Yellow Fin runs throughout the year, to tackle any emerging illegal motorcycle activity, we tactically conduct enforcement periods.
“Working alongside CID and our intelligence units by gathering information about people we suspect of carrying of illegal motorcycle activity, theft and associated anti-social behaviour it helps us not only with disruption and the seizure of stolen vehicles but our ongoing preventative activity.
“A key part of that is working with our partners along with the community to ensure we are able explore every opportunity, whether that be through designing out the ability for this type of offending to occur, through CCTV or additional bollards or taking enforcement action through the courts.
“While we appreciate that enforcement action is key, this is only one element of the work that forms part of the bigger picture surrounding those involved. It is essential that we seek to break the cycle of what those involved come to know from an environment they have always known.
“I cannot stress enough how important it is for us to hear from our residents about the problems they are experiencing as this helps us achieve a better understanding on how we tackle the issues.
“In summer months we do have hot-spot areas which see an increase in reports. Throughout this period, we will be running community surgeries and keeping residents up to date through MyCommunityAlert as we continue to tackle the issue.
“We continue to appeal for members of the public to help us by calling in information on people involved in motorcycle related crimes, and particularly where these motorcycles are being stored.
“We understand some reluctance of people to call the police directly and would suggest they call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The information they provide can be given anonymously and you could receive a Crimestoppers reward for the information provided.”
Humberside Police say they want to remind owners of some crime prevention tips to keep their motorbike safe:
- Always lock your bike with its fork and ignition locks.
- Invest in a secondary quality disc and chain locks.
- Secure your bike to a rail, anchor point or anything solid.
- Where there are no anchor points lock bikes together with your friends.
- Fit a quality approved alarm and tracking system. Invest in an insurance-approved ID and marking system (eg. micro dot, DNA marking, acid etching…)
- Park and lock your bike in well lit, busy locations. Try not to leave it in a remote area especially overnight.
- Cover your bike. It can hide its value and your security kit as well as protect it from the weather.
