Demolition works at a former driving test centre in Eastfield will finish within days to make way for a proposed £7 million supermarket.
The site on Cayton Low Road is being cleared by the budget supermarket chain Aldi ahead of a final planning decision by North Yorkshire Council.
Progress on the Scarborough development follows an initial setback in January, when the council rejected a prior notification for the demolition of two buildings on the site.
At the time, the multinational retailer, which is now one of the UK’s "big four" supermarket chains, expressed disappointment but confirmed the project would still go ahead.
A breakthrough for the proposed development occurred in March.
Planning officers ruled that prior approval for the demolition method and any proposed site restoration was unnecessary.
Council officials stated that the demolition work must be completed within five years from the date the application was submitted.
Now, the supermarket chain says the current demolition efforts, expected to finish in July, will help make the site safe and secure.
Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, an Aldi spokesperson said:
We continue to work closely with North Yorkshire Council as it considers Aldi’s planning application for a new store at the former Driving Test Centre in Eastfield. The site has been cleared in advance to help facilitate the timely delivery of the development should planning permission be granted.
The company remains optimistic about the scheme's progress and its ongoing collaboration with the local authority.
The Aldi spokesperson added:
We look forward to continuing to engage with the planning process and supporting the council towards determination of the application in the coming months.
