Scarborough Group International has denied rumours of financial difficulties and confirmed that plans to transform the former Brunswick shopping centre into a multiplex cinema are progressing as planned.
The company behind a major Scarborough town centre redevelopment project has said its scheme is progressing.
Plans to turn Scarborough’s former Brunswick centre into a multiplex cinema and leisure destination have not faltered and are going ahead, Scarborough Group International (SGI), the company behind the scheme, has said.
It comes amid rumours about the future of the project and the company leading the redevelopment, which is set to be supported with £3.5m of money from the Government’s Pride in Place initiative.
Scarborough Group International said it had been working closely with the local authority on the redevelopment of the Brunswick Centre since acquiring the site in September 2021, initially with Scarborough Borough Council and more recently with North Yorkshire Council, to “deliver a scheme that responds to the needs of the town and acts as a catalyst for further regeneration”.
A spokesperson for SGI categorically refuted rumours about the company – which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – being in financial dire straits.
They told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS):
“The redevelopment is being progressed through a package of public and private investment, as is typical for major town centre regeneration projects.
“£3.5 million has already been committed through the Pride in Place programme towards the redevelopment, subject to due diligence checks and the necessary approvals being completed, and we are in active discussions with North Yorkshire Council regarding further support for the scheme.”
The spokesperson added that the company also intends to pursue additional funding opportunities through the recently announced Mayoral Development Zone, subject to the relevant processes and approvals.
“There have been no discussions about North Yorkshire Council taking over the redevelopment from Scarborough Group,” they said.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Council also said the authority had “not held any discussions about taking over responsibility for the redevelopment of the Brunswick Centre from SGI”.
The Pride in Place £3.5m contribution towards SQ1 aims to support the redevelopment of the former Brunswick Shopping Centre into a leisure-led, mixed-use destination to revitalise the town centre and strengthen the evening economy.
A council report published earlier this year stated that the funding award allocated to Square One is “conditional on further due diligence including the submission of an updated business case with financial appraisal, and confirmation of match funding and delivery arrangements”.
It added that “no funds will be released for this project until these conditions are satisfied”.
