Nationwide Building Society has confirmed that its branch in Scarborough will remain open until at least the start of 2030, following an extension of the society’s long-standing Branch Promise.
The branch, located at 50 Westborough in Scarborough, YO11 1YJ, is one of 696 Nationwide and Virgin Money branches protected under this extended commitment.
The move by Nationwide comes amidst a national trend of banking institutions reducing their high street presence, described by figures from consumer group Which? as the largest bank branch closure programme in UK history. Which? figures indicate that 6,561 branches have been closed since January 2015. Nationwide asserts that its new commitment extends its existing Branch Promise by at least another two years.
Dame Debbie Crosbie DBE, Group Chief Executive at Nationwide, affirmed the importance of maintaining physical locations. She stated: “Our customers can be confident that they can bank with us whichever way they choose”. Dame Crosbie added that branches are vital "to our customers, to communities, and to the health of our High Streets. That’s why Nationwide will continue to keep branches open in addition to our investment in online and telephone channels”.
Nationwide data suggests that its decision reflects increased consumer reliance on in-person banking. In the twelve months leading up to September, the number of customers utilising Nationwide’s branches saw an increase of 11 per cent. Furthermore, figures show that over a third (33%) of current accounts and more than a fifth (22%) of savings accounts were opened in branch in the six months ending in September.
The building society noted that branch closures elsewhere have a disproportionate impact on vulnerable customers, including older people, who often rely on face-to-face services and support.
Local Services and Community Support
The Scarborough branch offers numerous face-to-face and accessibility services. These include the ability to pay in cash and cheques, pay bills, take out cash, and view a mini statement. The branch provides wheelchair access and an audio induction loop. Additionally, all of Nationwide's cash machines offer talking cash machine functionality, requiring customers to bring a headset or headphones.
The branch also supports community welfare initiatives. It acts as a Safe Space where customers and non-customers can call a helpline, support service, or friends and family for domestic abuse support. Nationwide also offers support in managing finances, providing a dedicated cost of living helpline for customers seeking expert advice on their specific situation amidst rising bills and price increases.
The society continues to invest in digital channels alongside its physical branches. Customers who cannot reach the branch can use the Banking App for features such as paying bills, moving money, and checking balances.
The extension of the Branch Promise ensures that the Scarborough location, situated at 50 Westborough, will remain part of Nationwide’s network for the foreseeable future.
