Bridlington Town and Blyth Spartans shared the points in a dramatic 1–1 draw filled with energetic attacking play, direct long-range efforts, and second-half disciplinary chaos.
Bridlington opened the scoring through Ifeanyi "Destiny" Nnenanya before Blyth equalised via a direct free-kick right at the end of the first half. A fiery second period saw both sides reduced to 10 men following separate double-yellow offences.
The match started fairly evenly with both sides creating a couple of chances, but Bridlington suffered an early setback in the 8th minute when Alex Markham was forced off following a heavy challenge, prompting the introduction of Riley Cooper.
Bridlington began controlling the midfield tempo midway through the half. In the 21st minute, Luca Bolino unleashed a strike from distance straight at the Blyth goalkeeper, with Blyth breaking instantly to force a corner. The Seasiders broke the deadlock in the 28th minute,
impressive work in midfield allowed Bolino space on the flank to pick out Destiny who controlled with one touch and smashed the ball high into the roof of the net.
Spartans mounted an immediate response, forcing Town keeper Alex Baird into a solid save to tip a long-range shot over the bar. Bridlington almost doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Luca Bolino hit a looping effort that bounced back off the crossbar. Two minutes later, Jack Foalle tested Baird again, but the Bridlington shot-stopper produced a strong hand to parry it wide. Right on the stroke of half-time, Blyth earned a controversial free-kick near the edge of the box, which led to jeers from all corners of the ground. Dan Lanning stepped up and unleashed a
rocket of a strike to level the match at 1–1 heading into the break.
The second half turned into a battle of attrition marked by heavy tackles and officiating interventions. In the 54th minute, Blyth's Olly Martin was booked for a late challenge. Barely a minute later, Robbie Spence lunged into a late sliding tackle, earning his second yellow card and seeing
Blyth reduced to 10 men.
Bridlington brought on Charlie Birdsall in the 65th minute to press their numerical advantage, maintaining steady pressure around the Blyth penalty box. However, tempers flared in the 72nd minute during a clash between Jordan Hickey and Birdsall, resulting in yellow cards for both
players. Just a minute later, Birdsall saw a second yellow after arriving slightly late on a challenge.
In a tense 10v10 final stretch, Bridlington put pressure on Blyth creating a number of openings, however, neither side could carve out a winner, leaving the teams to settle for a point a piece.
Scott Kerr spoke to Brid Town TV after the game:
Bridlington Town play again this Friday night as the head to Redcar Town in the FA Cup Preliminary round.
