Brass Band Residency Promises to Strengthen Youth Opportunities Across the East Riding

The East Riding of Yorkshire Band has taken up a new appointment as the brass band in residence at East Riding Music Service, signalling an exciting new chapter for music education across the region.

The partnership, which was announced this week, is set to significantly enhance brass band opportunities for young people.

The Music Service, which acts as the lead organisation for the East Riding Music Education Hub, works in collaboration with local and regional partners to provide high-quality musical provision for children and young people both in and out of school.

A Boost for Young Musicians

The core of this new partnership is the launch of a comprehensive programme designed for all abilities, including youth and junior brass bands. Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education, hailed the move, stating:

“This is an exciting development for the Music Service and a great step towards strengthening brass band opportunities for children across the East Riding”.

The residency aims to deliver crucial musical support through workshops and special brass sessions. Furthermore, aspiring musicians will benefit from instrument-specific tuition covering cornets, trombones, horns, baritones, euphoniums, basses, and percussion.

A key benefit of the arrangement is that children who are newly introduced to playing in a brass band will have the invaluable experience of performing alongside the established East Riding of Yorkshire Band, while also receiving additional musical support.

The Band's Community Commitment

The East Riding of Yorkshire Band is a registered charity based in Yorkshire. The band, which features players drawn from across the East Riding and the surrounding area, is known for performing at many local events, including shows and concerts.

The band maintains a strong connection to the local community, with upcoming engagements including a performance at the Hornsea Floral Hall last weekend.

The residency aligns with the broader mission of the East Riding Music Education Hub, which is tasked with ensuring every child aged 5–18 has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and develop clear, affordable progression routes. The Arts Council funds the East Riding Music Hub, helping it deliver high-quality experiences for pupils through collaborations with professional musicians,.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Band’s appointment ensures that brass band music remains accessible and thriving, offering young players the structured environment needed to progress from their first lessons to performing with an established ensemble.
