An unknown trialist caught the eye as Whitby Town beat Blyth Spartans at the Towbar Express Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Blues started strongly when their trialist in the number ten shirt forced a strong save from distance, with Jake Charles then coming close after good work from Alex Nelson and Layton Watts. Charles wasn't to be denied and Town led on 28 minutes when Aaron Haswell's left wing cross was nodded home emphatically by the ex-Scarborough man from just inside the Blyth penalty area.
However, the visitors levelled from the edge of the Whitby box, eight minutes before half-time.
Whitby regained the advantage, three minutes into the second half. Watts' deep corner was nodded in at the back post by the trialist.
Two minutes later it was 3-1 as Matty Tymon slipped in James Harrison to slot past the onrushing goalkeeper.
Blyth almost made it 3-2 but clipped the crossbar and instead, 18 minutes from time, Town netted their fourth.
A defensive error saw Harrison left free to clip in at the far post.
The trialist then scored his second, turning his marker and firing home. He came agonisingly close to completing his hat-trick late on, but it finished 5-1.
