A new banking hub has opened in Whitby, providing a shared banking space on the high street for the community.
The hub offers a counter service operated by the Post Office where customers of all major banks and building societies can carry out regular cash transactions, Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm.
Cash Access UK, the organisation set up to protect access to cash across the UK, has opened a temporary home for the banking hub in Whitby, located at 87 Church Street.
Customers of all major banks can visit any weekday between 9am-5pm to carry out regular cash transactions including cash withdrawals and deposits as well as checking balances or paying bills. Additionally, the hub also offers a community banker service where customers can talk to their own bank in a private space about more complicated issues on the day their bank is in the hub:
- Monday: No community banker available
- Tuesday: NatWest
- Wednesday: Halifax (from May)
- Thursday: HSBC
- Friday: Barclays
While the temporary hub in Whitby is up and running today, Cash Access UK can confirm it is currently working to secure a long-term home for the banking hub which will offer the same services.
- Counter services for cash transactions
- Community Banker service: Customers can discuss more complex banking issues with their own bank. Community Bankers work on rotation, with a different bank available each day. The banks with the most customers in the local area usually provide the Community Bankers.
- Business banking: Business customers are welcome to use the counter services for cash withdrawals, cash and cheque deposits, and other cash services including floats and coinage.
Cash Access UK says it recognises that cash is still important to millions of people in the UK, with between 5 and 6 million adults saying they rely on cash in their day-to-day lives. They also acknowledge that digital or online solutions don’t yet work for everyone all the time.
Cash Access UK is funded by the UK’s biggest banks, including AIB NI, Bank of Ireland UK, Barclays, Danske Bank, HSBC UK, Lloyds Banking Group, NatWest Group, Santander, TSB, and Virgin Money. These firms have come together to provide shared services available to all their customers. Cash Access UK is open to any bank or building society to join as long as they meet certain criteria.
LINK, the UK’s cash machine network, decides where new services are needed. LINK is an independent, regulated company with many years' experience in assessing communities' cash needs. They review the impact of every proposed branch closure by their member firms. A community can also ask LINK to carry out an assessment if they feel they need better access to cash.
This is the fourth banking hub to open in North Yorkshire, with hubs already operating in Filey, Knaresborough and Richmond. Whitby’s hub was recommended following the announcement of the final bank branch closure.
There are now 128 hubs open across the country.
Gareth Oakley, CEO at Cash Access UK:
“I’m happy to announce that the new banking hub in Whitby is now open, giving local residents access to cash and in-person banking services.
The hub is available for everyday banking transactions every day of the week, and for more specific or complex enquiries, a community banker will be on-site to assist on designated days.”
