Melania Trump statue goes missing from her hometown in Slovenia

A life-size statue of Melania Trump has gone missing from her hometown in Slovenia.

Police are investigating the disappearance of the bronze sculpture of the US first lady, which had replaced a wooden statue of her that had been set on fire.

The bronze creation was unveiled in 2020 during Donald Trump's first term in office, in the town of Sevnica in central Slovenia where Ms Trump was born in 1970.

Police spokesperson Alenka Drenik Rangus said officers were informed about the theft of the statue on Tuesday and were working to track down those responsible.

A picture showed the bronze sculpture had been sawn off at the ankles and removed.

The original wooden statue was cut from the trunk of a linden tree and showed Ms Trump in a pale blue dress like the one she wore to Mr Trump's presidential inauguration in 2017.

It was unveiled in July 2019 and set ablaze in July 2020.

A man who works at a bakery in Sevnica that sells cakes with Ms Trump's name said the stolen statue will not be missed.

"I think no one was really proud at this statue, not even the first lady of the USA," Franja Kranjc said.

"So I think it's OK that it's removed."
