Firefighters still battling 'dynamic' Suffolk wildfire as National Trust launches public appeal

Firefighters are still tackling a blaze that has caused "total devastation" to a heathland in Suffolk – with the National Trust launching a public appeal to restore the reserve.

A major incident was declared on Thursday after a large wildfire broke out at Dunwich Heath, near Leiston, shortly after 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Footage of the scene shows the once grassy, coastal area known for its purple heather reduced to a charred, barren landscape, which is still smouldering.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said crews have made "good progress" in fighting the blaze - but added that the situation remains "dynamic and potentially changeable".

Evacuated residents and holidaymakers were given a short window of time on Friday to collect essential belongings while accompanied by police escorts.

Suffolk County Council said there have been no injuries and no properties have been lost.

Launching its emergency fundraising drive, the National Trust said: "The impact of this fire will be felt for years to come."

The charity said the heath - which was an important area for wildlife such as nightjars, skylarks, the rare Dartford warbler, and butterflies including the rare silver-studded blue - is now "unrecognisable".

The National Trust's director-general Hilary McGrady said in a statement: "We are looking at total devastation of a beloved and important landscape.

"We've lost precious habitats, wildlife, trees, and a place where people have made memories over generations. It's heartbreaking.

"But together we can and will restore Dunwich and, crucially, make it more resilient and better adapted for the climate we're facing now, and the climate we'll be facing in future."

Ms McGrady added that the trust is "working hard to tackle climate change and prepare for more of it, but there's more hard work to be done".

"We can't do it alone," she continued. "We're a charity that relies on public support in so many ways. If you can donate, however much, please don't hesitate."
