'Snowflake' firm in ASOS hacking message issues response

The data firm mentioned in the ASOS hacking message has said the breach was not caused by a flaw in its system.

Customers received a push notification on Tuesday, apparently addressed to the firm's IT managers, saying the "Snowflake" had been "fully compromised".

The fashion app said some personal data had been accessed, such as name and contact details, but that payment information and passwords were safe.

Snowflake - the American data storage business that services ASOS - said on Friday the hack was not its fault.

"We can confirm this issue did not in any way result from a vulnerability, weakness, flaw, or misconfiguration with the Snowflake service, platform, or internal environments, and was not caused by Snowflake," said a spokeswoman.

"No remediation is required for Snowflake customers. We continue to encourage adherence to our security best practices."

ASOS said on Thursday the incident was caused by an "unauthorised party gained access to an ASOS employee account by impersonating a trusted contact to obtain log-in credentials".

It added: "Those credentials were then used to access information on certain third-party platforms used by ASOS.

"The affected platforms were immediately locked down, ensuring that no further information could be accessed and a full investigation was launched with the support of both internal and external cyber experts.

"We are also working with the relevant law enforcement and regulatory authorities."

The company - one of the best-known names in fast fashion - insisted its website and app remained safe and customers did not need to take any action.

However, it warned people to be "cautious of unexpected messages or calls claiming to be from ASOS".

"We will never ask you to share passwords, security codes or payment details through an unsolicited message or call," it added.

It said customers would be contacted again when the full investigation is concluded and "additional steps" to improve security had already been implemented.

The firm's shares fell as much as 15% in the hours after the incident, but as of Friday morning had recovered slightly to stand 5.8% down over the last five days.
