Seven dead and 34 injured after shooting at church in Jordan

Seven people have died and 34 have been injured after gunmen opened fire on a funeral at a church in Jordan.

It took place at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak governorate, about 110 miles south of the capital Amman.

A witness told TV channel Al Mamlaka that two men - one carrying a rifle and another a ‌pistol - opened fire for several minutes. The station said the men had got out of a vehicle before attacking the funeral at Hamoud church.

Images broadcast on Jordanian state television showed two gunmen appearing to be holding pistols approaching the church and firing shots. A third man who appears to be holding a semiautomatic rifle then appears and opens fire, and all three then run toward the church.

A government statement said that the attack was "carried out by unknown assailants," but didn't say whether any gunmen were captured or killed. It said that "investigations are underway at full speed".

There was no immediate claim of responsibility and authorities haven't yet said who was responsible.

Jordan's King Abdullah said the authorities would punish those behind the attack "with an iron fist".

Karak is home to a minority Christian population. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks in Karak, including at a Crusader castle popular with tourists, killing 10 people, including seven officers, and wounding dozens. Jordanian security forces killed those gunmen after a long standoff.

Such attacks are extremely rare in Jordan.

Christians make up a minority of Jordan's population. However, the country is home to several biblical sites that attract Christian pilgrims from around the world.

In 2016, Islamic State militants killed 14 people in an attack on the Karak Castle, a popular tourist site.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Syria's Foreign Ministry issued statements denouncing the "terrorist attack" and offering condolences to the victims' families and the people of Jordan.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein called his Jordanian counterpart and "affirmed Iraq's solidarity with Jordan in the face of terrorism," Hussein's office said in a statement.
