North Korea plans to resume propaganda broadcasts along border with South Korea

North Korea says it plans to resume propaganda broadcasts targeting South Korea within days along the heavily-armed border between the two countries.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said the North would have its loudspeakers for "psychological warfare" on standby.

The announcement came after she visited several fortification points along the contested border on Wednesday, and later said the loudspeakers would be activated by the end of October.

Tensions between the neighbours have worsened since last month, when three South Korean soldiers were injured in landmine blasts south of the military demarcation line - the 150-mile border that divides the two countries.

North Korea denied it was responsible, calling the incident a South Korean fabrication.

Pyongyang has been adding mines, barbed wire fences and anti-tank barriers along the border.

And it warned Seoul of "the most horrible and distressing situation" if it continued what Pyongyang called interference in the North's internal affairs.

"Our tactical hunting teams are taking new positions, and within October, the loudspeakers for psychological warfare against the ROK [Republic of Korea] will be in operation along the whole border," Ms Kim said.

South Korea's military said North Korean soldiers have crossed the border's military demarcation line 50 times this year during fortification work.

And that it responded with warning shots and broadcasts meant to force soldiers back across.

Ms Kim warned that if South Korean warning shots cause "actual harm to our territorial security and our service persons’ safety", then North Korean border guards "will show no mercy for the armed gangsters bereft of reason".

Ms Kim labelled South Korea's claims of border crossings by the North Koreans as a "false pretext, and said Seoul's provocations have gone "beyond the red line" since the mine blasts.

Both the North and the South have traditionally ‌used loudspeakers to broadcast propaganda across the border, with South Korean broadcasts featuring K-pop music and news that have annoyed Pyongyang and led to tit-for-tat responses.

Since Lee Jae Myung became South Korean president in 2025, he has stopped propaganda broadcasts and taken down the speakers in a bid to to ease tensions with Pyongyang, which then later ended broadcasts.

South Korea's foreign ministry said it would send a letter to the UN Security Council saying the blasts were caused by mines planted by North Korea and constituted a violation of the Korean War armistice.

The letter will also demand an apology from Pyongyang and call for discussions to ease tensions and prevent further intensification, a ministry spokesperson told a briefing.
