Man arrested after school coach crashes into ditch in Hampshire

A man has been arrested after the school coach he was driving crashed into a ditch with 29 pupils on board.

No children were hurt in the collision, which happened on the A36 near Ower, Hampshire, at 5.10am on Thursday.

However, one of four teachers on board suffered a minor leg injury and was treated at the scene.

Police said the driver, a 48-year-old from Hungerford, Berkshire, also suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

He was later arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving while unfit through drink or drugs and remains in custody.

The coach, which had been travelling from the Bristol area, came off the road between the Ower roundabout and junction 2 of the M27.

A police spokesperson said the vehicle "left the southbound carriageway" and then "went into a ditch."

The school and all parents of those involved have been contacted.

The busy road was closed for several hours during the morning rush hour, but has now reopened following a "complex recovery of the coach from the ditch," officers said.

The police spokesperson added: "We're appealing for any motorists who were on that stretch of road around the time of the collision to contact us if they saw the coach in the lead up to the incident, or if you may have any dash cam footage which could assist with our investigation."
