Foden and Palmer set to miss out on England World Cup squad - while Maguire confirms absence

Manchester City star Phil Foden and Chelsea's Cole Palmer are among the players set to miss out when England manager Thomas Tuchel names his 26-man squad for the World Cup, according to multiple reports.

Defender Harry Maguire, who has represented the Three Lions 66 times, will also be left out, with the Manchester United player confirming his absence in a social media post in which he said he was "shocked and gutted" by the decision.

Maguire said he had been confident he could have played "a major part this summer" but wished his teammates "all the best".

Aston Villa trio Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Ezri Konsa, who helped the club claim a first European title in more than 40 years on Wednesday, are set to be included, alongside experienced midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Former Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who has played just once during Tuchel's tenure but has scored 32 goals in 32 games for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League this season, will also be included, Sky Sports News understands.

Tuchel will announce his squad for this summer's tournament - which is co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico - at Wembley Stadium on Friday.

England are among the favourites to lift the trophy in July and end a 60-year wait for a World Cup triumph.

Inclusions and omissions

Despite being regular figures for the national team in recent years, Palmer and Foden's absences come after both players endured inconsistent seasons at club level.

Meanwhile, several of Arsenal's Premier League-winning squad - Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke - are believed to have secured their places on the plane, while Anthony Gordon and Kobbie Mainoo are also thought to have been selected.

Despite an injury-hit season, departing Manchester City defender John Stones is set to be included, alongside teammate Nico O'Reilly, who has had a stand-out campaign for Pep Guardiola's side.

However, the likes of Luke Shaw and Morgan Gibbs-White - who have both had impressive individual seasons - are believed to have missed out.

A costly endeavour

The Three Lions play warm-up matches against New Zealand and Costa Rica before kicking off their World Cup campaign on 17 June against Croatia in Arlington, Texas.

Tuchel's side then travel to Massachusetts to face Ghana before taking on Panama in New Jersey. England's base for the tournament will be in Kansas City.

However, for England fans hoping to travel to watch the team next month, they can expect to fork out thousands.

Sky's sport correspondent Rob Harris estimated that a two-day trip to New York to watch England's final group game will set supporters back more than £2,000.

Meanwhile, the cost of the best available tickets for the World Cup final on 19 July were tripled by FIFA earlier this month.

Football's governing body put seats for the match at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on sale for $32,970 (£24,176), having previously cost $10,990 (£8,000).

Last month, a ticket for the final on FIFA's resale site was listed at $2,299,998.85 (£1.7m).
