Boy shoots teacher at Texas school

A teenage boy has shot a teacher at a high school in Texas, before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting happened at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde, a small town around 25 miles (39km) north of San Antonio city centre.

Comal County Sheriff's Office issued a statement on social media: "A teacher was shot by a student and has been taken to a San Antonio hospital. At this time, we do not have an update on her condition.

"The student involved, a 15-year-old male, died at the scene."

A spokesperson for the sheriff's office told the AP news agency the student died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The school was placed on lockdown, and students were taken to a middle school to be reunited with parents, the sheriff's office added.

The school said its lockdown alarm was activated at 8.34am.

In a post on X, it said: "Students and staff are following the necessary procedures. Local law enforcement is responding."

In a subsequent update, the school said the campus was secure and "the threat has been contained".

Authorities have not said what may have led to the shooting.

The school, which is part of the Comal Independent School District, describes itself online as having a "strong focus on academics and college readiness skills".

It teaches students from the ninth through to 12th grade, children aged between 14 and 18.

The local sheriff's office later posted a message to parents via Facebook: "We understand how scary this has been for families and our entire community. Thank you for your patience."
