Boy, 17, charged after teenager is stabbed to death on beach in North Ayrshire

A 17-year-old boy has been charged after a teenager was stabbed to death on a beach in North Ayrshire.

Tributes have been paid to Kayden Moy, 16, who was found seriously injured following a report of a disturbance at Irvine Beach at around 6.45pm on Saturday.

The teenager, from East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, received medical care at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he died on Sunday.

Police Scotland launched an investigation, and the 17-year-old boy was arrested.

He is due to appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Police have said "extensive enquiries" remain ongoing in the case.

Kayden's family said in a statement: "Kayden will be sorely missed by his parents and two younger brothers.

"He was loved by so many, and that is shown in the huge number of heartfelt messages we have received since his death.

"We would like to thank everyone who has shown us support over these last few days."

Kayden's father, Paul Moy, had earlier paid tribute to his son in a post on Facebook.

He said: "My first-born son, my big boy, my best friend, my main man, my everything. Rest easy, my boy."

A GoFundMe fundraiser for Kayden's family has been launched by Busby AFC, where Kayden played in the youth set-up for several years.

The grassroots football community club said it was "devastated" over the teenager's death.

In a statement, a spokesperson added: "It has hit everyone hard.

"Kayden's grandfather is a long-term volunteer, player, coach and friend of the club. He currently spends his weeknights and weekends coaching Kayden's younger brother, who currently plays in our junior section too.

"We are aware that nothing will ever replace the life of an individual, but we hope that this fundraising will help Kayden's family at this extremely difficult time."

More than £9,000 had been raised as of 7.30pm on Monday.

Kayden had been a pupil at Duncanrig Secondary School.

Headteacher Annette Alexander said pupils and staff were "deeply shocked and saddened" by his death.

She added: "Kayden was a kind and caring young man and full of character. He touched the lives of many within our school community.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Kayden's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

"He will be greatly missed, but he will always be remembered with affection in our school."

Meanwhile, an online portal has been set up to allow members of the public to submit information directly to officers investigating the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Campbell Jackson, from Police Scotland's major investigations team, said: "Our thoughts remain with Kayden's family at this very difficult time. Specially trained officers are continuing to support Kayden's family.

"We believe this was a targeted attack and there is no risk to the wider public.

"We have a dedicated team of officers working on this investigation, and I am again asking anyone who may have information which could help us and who has not yet come forward, to please contact us."

Superintendent Jim McMillan said: "This was a shocking and deeply upsetting incident for not just those at Irvine Beach on Saturday, but for Kayden's family, friends and the wider communities affected. We are engaging with the communities in both Irvine and East Kilbride.

"There continues to be a police presence in the area, and additional patrols will be carried out where required. I would urge anyone with question or concern to approach a local officer - they are there to help."
