Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor granted £302,000 in compensation after lease on Royal Lodge officially surrendered

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been granted £302,000 in compensation after his lease on his former Royal Lodge home in Windsor was officially surrendered, a Crown Estate spokesperson said.

The former prince left Royal Lodge earlier this year and is now living on the Sandringham Estate.

It's understood Andrew has fully vacated the property and paid £1.8m for repair and restoration costs.

Andrew was entitled to compensation because, as per the terms of his lease, he surrendered it within the first 25 years.

A spokesperson for The Crown Estate added: "The lease for Royal Lodge has ended and our focus now is firmly on its future use and the opportunities to generate additional financial value for the nation from its early return."

The spokesperson said the property will now be marketed by two agents for its proposed future use.

The Crown Estate spokesperson added on Friday that a compensation clause was added into the terms because of Andrew's payment of £7.5 million for refurbishment at the 30-room property at the start of his lease.

The former prince moved out of Royal Lodge in February as part of a permanent move to Norfolk. He is now living in a house on Sandringham Estate.

He had lived at the 30-room mansion on the Windsor Estate for more than 20 years.

The move came after Buckingham Palace said last October that notice had been served for Andrew to surrender his lease at the Royal Lodge.

The palace also said that the King had initiated the "formal process" to remove Andrew's titles and honours.

It came after the US Department of Justice released files relating to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, which contained allegations made against Andrew by one of the billionaire's victims.

Andrew has always denied the allegations against him.

It also comes after a National Audit Office report in June found Andrew received an undisclosed private income from subletting three cottages on his Royal Lodge estate for two decades, while paying a peppercorn rent - usually nominal and as low as £1.

He was entitled to sublet up to three properties on the Royal Lodge estate in Windsor Great Park under the terms of his lease.

No figures have been provided on how much income the properties generated, with the NAO saying the figure was private.

However, royal insiders suggested that Andrew's subletting did not produce a profit because the rate only covered maintenance and running costs.

Former Liberal Democrat minister Norman Baker, who has long been a critic of royal finances, branded the arrangements as "outrageous".

"It shows an absolute total contempt for the taxpayer," he said. "Not only that Andrew was able to have a peppercorn rent for a gigantic property, but then to make potentially millions on the side from subletting properties.

"The money should have gone to the Crown Estate, not into his pockets."
