The agency highlights that "Significant impacts are possible across the health and social care services due to the high temperatures".
Potential consequences of the high temperatures, as described by the UKHSA, include "a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions," while acknowledging that "there may also be impacts on younger age groups".
Furthermore, the agency anticipates "a likely increase in demand for health services". Concerns have also been raised that "internal temperatures in care settings (hospitals and care homes) may exceed the recommended threshold for clinical risk assessment".
The UKHSA also notes that the heat could potentially "affect the ability of the workforce to deliver services" and contribute to "indoor environments overheating increasing the risk to vulnerable people living independently in community and care settings".
According to the UKHSA, the Weather health alerting system is designed to provide an early warning when adverse temperatures are likely to affect the health and wellbeing of the population. It specifically targets the health and social care sector, the responder community, the voluntary and community sector, and government departments, underpinning the broader Adverse Weather and Health Plan.
