Work on Cow Wath Bridge Continues

Work is progressing to repair Cow Wath Bridge into Goathland after it was hit by a heavy goods vehicle.

North Yorkshire County Council says work is progressing to repair Cow Wath Bridge into Goathland after it was hit by a heavy goods vehicle.

A four-week programme of repair works is taking place under a full road closure after the incident on October 20.

Barnet House Railway Bridge, known locally as Cow Wath Railway Bridge, crosses the North Yorkshire Moors Railway heading into Goathland from Whitby.

A diversion route is in place via the A169 and Moorgates, although this is only suitable for vehicles under 11ft 3ins.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said:

“Work began on site immediately after the incident to make the area safe. We are now repairing the damage to the bridge that took place this week as well as the damage on the opposite side due to a collision earlier in the year.

“Unfortunately, vehicle strikes on our bridges, many of which are listed structures, are becoming more frequent. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this will cause, and ask for your cooperation during the works period.”
