Whitby's Bothams Gets Alcohol Licence

Wednesday, 10 March 2021 15:55

By Carl Gavaghan, Local Democracy Reporter

A Whitby bakery has been granted an alcohol licence to allow it to sell something a bit stronger within its popular hampers.

Botham’s of Whitby, an institution in the town for more than a century, had applied to Scarborough Borough Council for the off sales licence for its Enterprise Way store.

It will now be allowed to add alcohol to be sold along with online orders from its website.

In its application the company stated that it was not planning to sell alcohol to be consumed on the premises.

It said:

“We are only selling gift hampers predominantly made up of our baked goods, but with the addition of some beers, wines or spirits.”

The licence has now been granted following a public consultation.

Elizabeth Botham set up her bakery in the ancient fishing port of Whitby over 150 years ago.

It now has three locations in the town with bakeries in Skinner Street and Baxtergate alongside the Enterprise Way unit on the Whitby to Scarborough Road.
