Whitby Town Signs Zimbabwe International Joey Phuthi Ahead Of New Season

A twenty-one-year-old Zimbabwe international has secured a permanent move to Whitby Town following a successful pre-season trial.

A permanent move to the Towbar Express Stadium has been secured by Zimbabwe international Joey Phuthi ahead of the new football season.

The twenty-one-year-old will join Whitby Town following a series of strong performances during a pre-season trial with the Pitching In Northern Premier League club.

Pace and attacking qualities have already been demonstrated to supporters during the Blues' summer fixtures. The versatile player is capable of operating as a winger, wing-back, or full-back, and brings added depth to the squad for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign.

The youngster's signature was secured after his attitude and ability on the pitch impressed Whitby manager Lee Bullock during the summer preparations.

Born in Harare, the footballer relocated to England at a young age and began his career progressing through the Sheffield Wednesday academy system. A first professional contract was signed with the English Football League side in 2023.

Senior football experience was initially gained during the 2023/24 campaign, featuring for the Owls in both league and cup competitions. Further development in the senior game came through spells away from Hillsborough.

Time on the pitch was secured with National League South side Eastbourne Borough and Northern Premier League East outfit Cleethorpes Town as the player continued to build his domestic experience.

International recognition followed shortly after, with a senior debut for the Zimbabwe national team taking place in 2024.

The former Sheffield Wednesday academy graduate will now look to establish himself within the first team on the Yorkshire Coast. Attention turns to helping the Seasiders build momentum as preparations continue for the start of the new season.
