A Scarborough transport charity that provided more than 23,000 trips for older and disabled residents last year has bolstered its leadership team with three new trustees.
Older and disabled residents in Scarborough will continue to receive vital transport support as a local charity bolsters its leadership team following a record-breaking year.
More than twenty-three thousand trips were completed by Scarborough Dial a Ride last year, representing an eleven per cent increase on the previous twelve months. The service relies on a dedicated team of volunteers who gave a staggering twenty thousand hours of their time to keep the distinctive white and blue vehicles on the road.
The overall direction of the registered charity, which has operated in the town for over forty years, is overseen by a board of trustees. These leaders are responsible for making sure the organisation is well-run and meeting all its legal obligations. The charity has now welcomed three new members to this board, bringing the total number of trustees to six.
The appointments follow the retirement of local businesswoman Val Green, who stepped down after three years of service.
Chair of Trustees at Scarborough Dial a Ride, Colin Woodhead, said:
"Val has been such a wonderful Trustee for the past three years and we are so grateful to her for the time, skills and experience she so willingly shared. Whilst we are very sad to see Val go, we are absolutely delighted to welcome three new Trustees to help us safeguard the future of this vital service. Between them they bring a wealth of relevant experience, knowledge and skills and we are grateful that they have chosen to support Scarborough Dial a Ride."
The incoming trustees bring a mix of hands-on community experience and professional skills to the transport network. Jonathan Knight joins the board having already served as a volunteer driver for the charity for thirteen years. His background includes service in the Royal Air Force, a career in the hospitality sector, and roles as President of the Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers and a volunteer Ranger for the North York Moors National Park.
Karen Brown is new to the organisation, bringing previous experience in self-employment, marketing, and administration. With a strong interest in services that help to alleviate exclusion and isolation, she has also taken on roles as a passenger assistant and car driver to ensure she has first-hand experience of supporting passengers.
The third new trustee, Nick Bland, is another current volunteer driver for the charity. He brings years of public service experience, including volunteer work for Scarborough Sixth Form College and the Citizens Advice Witness Service.
Manager at Scarborough Dial a Ride, Steve Marsh, said:
"It is so heartening that when so many organisations struggle to recruit volunteers, we have been able to attract the support of such talented people to become Trustees. It is a role which comes with great responsibility and I would like to thank them all for joining the team."
Local residents interested in supporting the community transport network can still get involved. The charity is actively seeking more volunteer drivers and passenger assistants to help meet the growing demand for its services.
Anyone wishing to find out more about volunteering opportunities can contact Steve Marsh on 01723 354434 between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
