A charity operating on the Yorkshire Coast says it's shining a light on the incredible impact of volunteers this week.
Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind are inviting more local people to get involved in supporting mental health.
From befriending and peer support to young people’s hubs and creative sessions, Mind say volunteers play a vital role in helping people feel heard, valued and less alone.
Funding and Communications Coordinator at SWR Mind is Hayley Doubtfire:
One of SWR Mind’s trustees, James, also volunteers through the charity’s befriending service, and shared this reflection on the project:
“This is such a brilliant project when you see how the simple idea of just connecting people works so effectively in practice – helping people become themselves and connect again. But what surprised me most was how much I got out of it as the volunteer who enabled that change.”
Hayley added:
Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind are currently seeking volunteers in the following roles:
- Befrienders – offering regular, friendly check-ins to reduce loneliness and isolation.
- Young People’s Hub Volunteers – supporting safe, welcoming spaces for young people to connect and take part in activities.
- Marketing & Communications Volunteers – helping spread the word through social media, content creation, and awareness campaigns.
- Fundraising Volunteers – supporting local fundraising events and helping raise vital funds.
- Peer Support & Creative Session Leaders – running group sessions based on lived experience or creative activities.
- General Admin Volunteers – providing vital behind-the-scenes support in SWR Mind's offices.
- Trustees – joining SWR Mind's board to help shape the future of the charity. They welcome individuals from all backgrounds and experiences who are passionate about mental health. No previous board experience is required — just commitment, compassion, and a desire to help drive change.
Full training and ongoing support are provided for all volunteer roles. Whether you can offer a few hours each week or support occasionally, there’s a role for you at SWR Mind.
