Video Shows Whitby Hospital Progress

Large-scale renovation works at Whitby Hospital, costing £13.1 million, can be seen in a new video released by NHS partners to mark progress so far.

The renovation has seen the tower block part of the building completely stripped out and reconstructed.

Services have been decanted into the low rise part of the hospital, which was itself renovated in order to receive patients over the course of the works to the tower block.

Works to the tower block are aimed at delivering a modern, fit for purpose health facility in the centre of Whitby town, in line with the results of the public consultation on local health provision conducted by NHS North Yorkshire CCG.

The new hospital will house dental and podiatry services, inpatient facilities, including those for mental health, an audiology suite and a café on the ground floor.

NHS partners have joined forces to produce a video charting the work so far and capture staff reaction to the progress that’s been made.

Peter Todd, Principal Construction Manager at NHS Property Services said:

“We hope the video we have produced highlights the local health system’s commitment to properly addressing the health need in Whitby and the work that we have done so far in delivering a modern and sustainable health facility for the community for years to come.”

Amanda, Bloor, NHS North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Accountable Officer, said:

“The CCG is delighted to see the progress so far and I want to thank our NHS partners and the Whitby community for their energy and ongoing commitment.

“As the commissioners of health services, we began looking at how Whitby Hospital could be improved in 2014 and with strong public support for remodelling the hospital, we set about securing the necessary funds.

“We understand the very important role the hospital plays in health and care in Whitby and while its purpose might have evolved since the days of the War Memorial hospital in 1925, it remains as relevant today as it was almost 100 years ago.

“This redevelopment will ensure it retains its place at the heart of the community for many more years to come and Whitby will have a modern hospital the town can be proud of.”

Michele Moran, Chief Executive at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“The Whitby Hospital and Gardens renovation is vital as it will give the local community the hospital facilities they deserve. This modernisation and development will establish a fit for purpose health hub in the heart of Whitby for years to come.

“We are proud as a Trust to be a driving force behind such an important project, and I would like to thank everyone who has been and continues to be involved. You’re making a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of our local communities and bringing hope to many during this particularly challenging time.”
