Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after a fatal collision on the A171 near Scaling Dam on Friday night.
At about 11.45pm on Friday 2 October 2026, officers received a report of a collision involving a grey Peugeot 2008 and a blue VW Golf.
At the time of the collision the Peugeot was travelling east and the VW was travelling west on the A171.
Emergency services attended immediately. Tragically, the passenger in the Peugeot - a woman in her 70s - was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a man in his 90s, was taken to hospital, but his condition deteriorated and he was also pronounced dead.
The driver and passenger in the VW, a man in his 20s and a teenager, were taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Enquiries into the collision are ongoing. Police are urging anyone who may have seen the collision, or either vehicle prior to it, to contact them straight away. They particularly want to hear from anyone with relevant dashcam footage.
