Thousands Of Disabled People In Hull And East Riding To Be Supported Into Work

Thursday, 12 March 2026 18:30

By Andrew Spence, Local Democracy Reporter

Hull and East Yorkshire is to receive up to £11.7 million from the Government to support thousands of disabled people and those with health conditions into jobs.

The Government’s new Connect to Work programme hopes to break down barriers often faced by disabled people. Nationally, a new £300 million investment into the Connect to Work programme will support over 75,000 people across 16 areas in England and Wales. Hull and East Yorkshire is one of the areas that are to receive funding.

In Hull and East Yorkshire, the funding will support 3,400 people. The suppliers, who will deliver the programme in the region are yet to have been appointed. A tender process will take place where interested parties will be able to bid for contracts.

Minister for Employment, and the MP for Hull North and Cottingham, Dame Diana Johnson said:

This government believes in the potential of every person in every part of the UK. That’s why I’m delighted to confirm funding for Hull and East Riding.

For too long, too many people have been written off and left behind. Connect to Work changes that – giving people real, tailored support to move into good jobs and out of poverty. That’s what spreading opportunity means in practice.

Luke Campbell, Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, said:

This is great news for Hull and East Yorkshire, and for the people who will benefit from Connect to Work. I’m proud of the hard work my team has shown to get our plan approved. It means we now have something that’s focused on what will actually work for residents across our region.

Being in work gives people structure, confidence and independence – I’m excited to help more people get practical support and take steps towards employment in a way that’s right for them.
