A senior North Yorkshire Councillor has suggested holiday makers heading to Scarborough should take a stroll in the South Bay before heading to the North Bay for a swim.
North Yorkshire Council's Executive Member for the Environment - Councillor Greg White - was responding to a question about funding for investigations in to the causes of South Bay's poor water quality.
At yesterday's quarterly meeting of the full North Yorkshire Council, Scarborough Councillor Rich Maw had asked the executive member if the authority was offering financial support to the Environment Agency to help investigate the causes of the poor water bathing quality ratings in Scarborough's South Bay.
Having heard Councillor White's initial response, Councillor Maw said it wasn't acceptable to suggest tourists should head to North bay for a swim and again called on the council to help fund investigations in to the water quality issues.
Councillor White's response was that it was a matter for the Environment Agency to investigate, he didn't commit the council to providing any funds.
The council's Executive Member for Open to Business, Scalby Councillor Derek Bastiman, later added that the authorities Chief Exec has this week written to the Environment Agency raising concerns about the situation.
