With the weekend upon us once again there is a strong reminder from leaders in North Yorkshire that lockdown is not over and the stay at home order is still in force.
Last weekend saw 169 COVID fines issued across the county as large numbers of people flouted the stay at home rule.
Police reported an increase in the numbers of people visiting the Yorkshire Coast and a worrying amount of confusion about the lockdown rules after the Governments roadmap announcement.
This weekend the county's leaders are clearly stating that lockdown is still here and people should not leave their homes apart for the permitted reasons.
Louise Wallace is North Yorkshire's Director of public health.
Last weekend's 169 fines included fixed penalty notices issued to 21 people at a Birthday party in Scarborough and numerous people who had travelled to the coast for non-essential reasons.
Superintendent Mike Walker from North Yorkshire Police says it's a worrying situation.
Superintendent Walker said “We are not at the point where we can abandon social distancing and all the other precautions we’ve been taking over the past year and just throw caution to the wind.”
He again voiced North Yorkshire Police’s continued commitment to policing the Coronavirus Health Regulations, stating “We will keep on policing the regulations and taking enforcement action against breaches, we will keep sending out patrols and we will keep engaging with the public , to protect all of our chances of moving out of lockdown as quickly and safely as possible.”
