Young people across Scarborough and Whitby will gain access to more extracurricular activities after seven local schools were invited to join a multi-million-pound government programme.
Students at seven schools across Scarborough and Whitby will gain enhanced access to extracurricular activities through a new national initiative.
The Enrichment Expansion Programme aims to help young people build confidence, discover new talents, and develop a strong sense of belonging.
The targeted schools include George Pindar, Graham, Woodlands Academy, Scalby, Whitby, Brompton Hall, and Westwood Academy.
Backed by a twenty-two-and-a-half million pound national investment, the scheme will allow these educational settings to build stronger partnerships with local sports clubs, charities, cultural organisations, and community groups. The funding is being delivered jointly by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Education.
Work with the selected schools is scheduled to begin in January 2027 and will run until March 2029. The initiative is designed to improve pupil engagement by providing high-quality opportunities both inside and outside the school gates.
The expansion programme forms part of a wider government drive to ensure children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds or with special educational needs, are not excluded from experiences that help them thrive.
By broadening access beyond the standard curriculum, the initiative aims to help pupils build lasting friendships and engage in positive real-world experiences.
The announcement follows recent confirmation that a separate pioneering initiative, known as Mission Coastal, is also being piloted in the constituency. The Mission Coastal programme has the potential to transform outcomes for young people in the area, following local campaigning in Westminster.
Scarborough and Whitby Member of Parliament Alison Hume welcomed the inclusion of the local educational settings.
Ms Hume said:
"Every young person in Scarborough and Whitby deserves the chance to find something they love, build their confidence and discover what they're capable of.
"Whether through sport, music, volunteering or other activities, these experiences can make a real difference to the rest of a young person’s life.
"That's why I'm delighted that schools in our area have been invited to take part in this programme.
"It's a positive investment in our young people, helping ensure more children, including those who might otherwise miss out, can develop new skills and broaden their horizons."
Ms Hume added:
"This government understands the importance of drama, dance, music and sport in children’s development. We are determined to give children equal opportunities to access. I’m so pleased that the need for investment in Scarborough and Whitby has been recognised and thrilled for the children who will benefit."
