The area surrounding Scarborough railway station will undergo a major £6.68 million transformation starting early next year following the approval of new planning proposals.
The area surrounding Scarborough railway station is set to undergo a major multi-million-pound transformation early next year, aimed at creating a far more welcoming arrival point for both residents and visitors.
The ambitious project promises to deliver the most significant changes to the station forecourt in decades. It will create an entirely new public space and dramatically improve one of the busiest and most important gateways into the town.
A redesigned forecourt space will feature heavily improved pedestrian routes, new seating areas, comprehensively resurfaced footpaths, and extensive tree planting. Key station facilities will also see significant upgrades as part of the plans, including much-needed enhancements to taxi access and disabled parking provision.
Construction work on the scheme is officially due to start early next year, after formal planning approval was granted on Thursday, October 8th. Preparatory work on the site is expected to begin in the coming months to pave the way for the main development.
The sweeping improvements are intended to strengthen Scarborough's vital role as a public transport hub. Officials also hope the forecourt development could help unlock future regeneration opportunities, which may include further enhancements within the historic station building itself and bringing currently unused areas back into everyday use.
The transformation scheme is being funded through a £6.68 million cash injection secured from the Government’s Local Regeneration Fund.
North Yorkshire Council’s deputy leader and executive member for open to business, Councillor Mark Crane, said:
"This is a major milestone for a project that has been many years in the making and was first started under the former borough council.
Securing planning approval means we can now move forward with significant improvements to one of Scarborough’s busiest gateways, creating a more attractive and welcoming entrance to the town for residents and visitors.
The scheme complements other regeneration work taking place in Scarborough, including plans to revitalise West Pier, and we hope it can act as a catalyst for further investment and improvements in the years to come."

Initial proposals for the first phase of the Station Gateway scheme were originally developed by the former Scarborough Borough Council. These early plans were submitted for planning approval back in 2022, prior to the launch of the new North Yorkshire Council unitary authority in April 2023.
The project has since been developed and refined following extensive collaborative work. This involved the council, the Scarborough Neighbourhood Board, station operators, transport users, and various other local stakeholders. The final designs were specifically refined to focus on improving the immediate area surrounding the station.
The new proposed designs that have now been approved were developed by architects and engineers at Align, the council's own property consultancy.
The chair of North Yorkshire Council’s Scarborough and Whitby Area Planning Committee, Councillor Phil Trumper, said:
"After some changes were made to the application, the committee decided to vote in favour of this scheme.
The improvements will make a huge difference to that part of Scarborough."
