Scarborough RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew and fundraisers are ready to welcome the public to the 2025 Lifeboat Day on Saturday.
For many years, Scarborough lifeboat station has welcomed the public to the station for a day to celebrate their open day (formerly known as flag day). The station will be hosting an Open Day on Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm at Scarborough RNLI Lifeboat Station.
During these times the station at Foreshore Road will be open to the public and people can meet the volunteer crew and visits team and have a tour around the station, boats and equipment. The water safety team and swim safe team will be available for advice. The Lifeboat Guild will be running a raffle and tombola.
There will be several activities for adults and children, refreshments, a cake stall, and book stall, the lifeboat shop will also be open. The team is hoping that people will join in and support the local crew and help to save lives at sea.
Adam Sheader, RNLI Scarborough inshore lifeboat Helm said the Shannon Lifeboat will also be open for people to look around:
"So you'll be able to go inside the boat, have a look at all the equipment that we have on board, and look at some of the systems that we use on search and rescues. We'll also have tour of the de class life boat. So that's the inshore boat that we use for shoreline searches and rescues close to shore.
We'll also be able to have a look at the Shannon Launch and Recovery System, the Lars, which is the large tractor and trailer that the boat is sat on. So there'll be people explaining what that does and how that works. We'll be able to go into the crew room, have a look at the kit that we wear."
He added:
"Absolutely everything on that station is paid for by charity. So the boat and everything has all been paid for by donations from the public. So there is no government funding at all for the RI. It's an incredible organization that takes an incredible amount of money to run. So donations that people give are just absolutely imperative."
Entrance to Flag Day 2025 is free and no registration is required, for boat and station tours, the RNLI have a suggested donation of £2.
