Scarborough Day Centre Celebrates Its First Birthday

Cosy Corner, run by the Yorkshire Care Group, celebrated its 1st birthday last week, with over fifty people attending the event.

The facility is used by North Yorkshire Council, Yorkshire and Humber ICB and Dementia Forward, and provides daytime respite for the elderly and people with dementia.

Since opening last summer they have had highlights over the year including a Gecko in attendance for all the attendees to hold; visits from children at a local nursery and weekly chair-based exercises.  The group has also formed Cosy Corner Choir which is enjoyed by many attendees, and they all sang at the event too.

At the event they also took part in the ICB’s Care Olympics, with a team name - Corner Crushers. This involved competing against other Care providers in several games to see who comes out with the winning scores. Some of the games included paper plate discus; hook a duck; drop the coin; soft tip darts; ring toss; bean bag throw, balloon volleyball and many more.

Clair Sandland who runs the centre said:

“This year, the outdoor area at Cosy Corner has been thoughtfully developed through co production to create an inviting space for all daycare attendees to enjoy. The improvements include carefully selected anti-slip decking and a small gardening area, designed to support the interests of our attendees, many of whom enjoy gardening and spending time outdoors.  We are delighted with the transformation of the space and look forward to seeing it enjoyed by attendees, families, and visitors alike.”

They have also received a donation of garden equipment from Skipton Bank, which was put forward by a wife whose husband attends every week.

CEO of the group Angela Fletcher added:

“It has been brilliant linking up with the local nursery, every Tuesday morning the preschool class from Happy Jays Nursery visits us to take part in activities alongside individuals attending the daycare. These intergenerational sessions have included chair-based exercise classes, arts and crafts activities, and a firm favourite among everyone involved, singing nursery rhymes together. The children enthusiastically lead the songs, while the daycare attendees happily join in, always rewarding them with the biggest round of applause.”

“We have found these visits to be hugely beneficial and enjoyable for all involved. Both the attendees from Cosy Corner and the children from Happy Jays look forward to spending time together each week, creating meaningful connections and bringing joy to everyone who takes part.”

Plans for the coming year include creating a vegetable patch in the garden area to have some garden to table food options for the attendees, continuing the relationship with the local Nursery, and continuing working with Dementia Forward for people with young onset Dementia with the time out together group.
