Scarborough Councillor Goes Green

Friday, 5 December 2025 11:56

By Joe Willis, Local Democracy Reporter

A political group on North Yorkshire Council led by Green Party councillors has increased its numbers.

Councillor Rich Maw, previously an unaligned independent member, has joined the Green and Independents Group as an independent.

The Weaponness and Ramshill division councillor said his decision “reflected a natural alignment of values and priorities”.

He added:

“I have decided to join the Green and Independents Group on North Yorkshire Council because its values closely match my own.

“The group’s commitment to fairness, social justice, environmental responsibility, and strong local representation aligns with the priorities I hold for our communities. Working together will strengthen my ability to stand up for residents and deliver positive, practical change.”

The move means the Green and Independents Group now has eight members and becomes the fourth largest group on the authority, behind the Conservatives and Independents, the Liberal Democrats and Labour.

Group leader, Councillor Kevin Foster, welcomed the new member.

He said:

“We’ve always valued collaboration, and Rich has consistently shown himself to be a dedicated and hardworking councillor.

“His deep commitment to his residents and his strong community values make him a fantastic addition to our group. We’re delighted to welcome him.”
