Millions of pounds in new funding will see Scarborough's Construction Skills Village reopen to train a new generation of builders and tradespeople.
Opportunities for young people and adults wanting to enter the building trades will expand significantly with the planned reopening of Scarborough's Construction Skills Village.
Up to £2 million has been approved to revive the coastal training facility, forming part of a wider £5 million funding package aimed at boosting construction careers across the county.
The financial boost was approved by cabinet members at the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority on Friday.
The reopening of the Scarborough site remains subject to a full business case being agreed upon by officials.
Once operational, the Scarborough centre will offer technical education and apprenticeships, alongside retraining courses for adults looking to upskill in a new profession.
A further £1 million from the funding package will be directed towards creating a brand new construction training facility linked directly to the York Central development.
Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, outlined the reasons behind the major investment. He said:
"We're going to build 60,000 new homes so we're going to need a lot of brickies, sparkies, joiners, and more. That's why we're creating more opportunities for young people and those wanting to reskill to get into the building trades.
Two new construction skills villages are going to create thousands of highly talented tradies to build the homes our county urgently needs."
The initiative forms part of the Mayor’s wider Cradle to Career ambition, which is described as a long-term strategy designed to give every young person the chance to thrive from birth, through their education, and into the workplace.
Alongside the two skills villages, training providers will receive a share of an additional £2 million.
This money is earmarked for upgrading facilities and purchasing specialist equipment to support emerging growth sectors, which include clean energy, life sciences, sustainable agriculture, and rail innovation.
North Yorkshire Council’s Leader, Councillor Carl Les, welcomed the cash injection for the coast. He said:
"We want to ensure all our communities have the very best opportunities with skills and training available to help them pursue the careers that they want to.
This important capital investment in Scarborough will help to deliver fit for purpose facilities to provide those opportunities along the coast and drive forward the economy both locally and across the region.
The additional £2 million in funding for skills providers will target training across sectors that show huge potential for growth including clean energy, life sciences, rail innovation and sustainable agriculture."
The multi-million-pound package is funded through the Local Growth Fund for York and North Yorkshire.
It is specifically designed to enable growth ambitions in both Scarborough and York, which have recently been designated as Mayoral Development Zones.
These development zones are a key tool granted through devolution, allowing the Mayor to prioritise specific areas for major development.
They are intended to bring together developers, landowners, and local authorities to attract private sector investment while actively aligning public funding.
To kickstart the next phases of development within these zones and unlock further government and private backing, an initial £10 million Regeneration Fund has also been established.
