Scarborough Borough Council Bosses Issue Seasonal Update

The leader and the Chief Exec of Scarborough Borough Council have issued a seasonal message to residents of the borough.

In the latest residents newsletter council leader Steve Siddons and Chief Exec Mike Greene say:

"As we prepare for the festive season, a new variant of Covid-19 has reached the UK and with it comes uncertainty about what effect it will have on us all.

2021 has been the year in which we’ve had to learn to live with the coronavirus and it seems things are not going to change any time soon.

It is quite likely your attention is now turning to Christmas, and we suspect your seasonal plans will revolve around your family.

This year, family and friends have probably been more important than ever before as we adjusted to the reality of life set against the backdrop of a nasty virus.

We’d like to say another ‘thank you’ for everything you’ve done to minimise the spread of Covid-19 and to protect your own family, friends and other people across the borough.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, there have been some positives in 2021.

As international travel restrictions were enforced, more people chose a staycation.

Combined with the good weather in the summer, we welcomed many additional visitors to the Yorkshire coast.  It’s quite possible you will have noticed how busy it was at times.

This was good news for borough businesses who rely on the tourism and visitor economy.

Earlier this year we published a new strategy for how we want to develop the Yorkshire coast as a destination.  Our ambition is to ensure people come to the borough all year round.

We also continued to make progress with our ambitious investment and regeneration programme in 2021.

Possibly the most significant element was approval to go ahead with the transformation of the area around Scarborough railway station and the purchase of Pavilion House.

Projects in Whitby, and a separate plan of investment for Filey, will come forward next year.

Looking forward to 2022, we expect to be able to share further news with you about the progress made to create our new joint venture to drive forward our Better Homes initiative.

We have started the process to find a partner organisation to help us realise our ambition to provide more affordable – and higher quality – homes across the borough.

2022 will also be the year in which we host the national Armed Forces Day event.  Our borough will get a lot of attention in June.  Excitement is already building.

We hope you enjoy Christmas and New Year.  With best wishes for 2022."

The latest newsletter also contains information on the Borough Council's opening hours over the festive period. Many services will be closed from midday on Christmas Eve until Tuesday 4 January. The council say that If there’s an emergency, then their out of hours page has ways to contact them.

The newsletter also contains information on refuse collections over the Christmas period.

"We get some additional weekday bank holidays this year because Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s days all fall on a weekend.

It means your bin collection days will be different from 27 December right through to 22 January.  Standard collections will begin again on Monday 24 January..

If you want to check your collection day, please use our bin collection calendar.

Please make sure your bin is outside your property by 6.30am on the day the crew is due to swing by."
