Last season's play-off finalists were in Scarborough as competitive football return to the town on Saturday.
South Shields netted early but spent most of the match on the back foot.
Their 11th-minute strike was followed by great chances for Luke Hall, Mo Fadera and Rio Allan.
Luca Colville then came agonisingly close in added time with many Boro fans thinking the ball crossed the line.
At the end, Shields were denied by defenders Will Thornton and Kieran Weledji, plus keeper Ryan Whitley as Boro held firm.
A second half sending off gave the Seadogs a boost but they couldn't quite find a goal.
Boro boss Jono Greening told SAFC TV he remains upbeat despite losing out:
"We wanted to be really brave, really aggressive, and try and press them, really high up the pitch. Obviously, you know, a good play for their goal.
"Second half, I thought we started really, really well. On the front foot, in their faces, played some really good stuff again. When they got a man sent off, the game changed even in, even more into our favour. We've passed them off the pitch last 30 minutes with an extra man.
"The ball's nearly gone over the line two or three times. The thing that's let us down a little bit today is our decision-making. I think there was one towards the end where Keys [Kieran Weledji] has played it back to Rio [Allan] at the edge of the box and it needs to be, you know, nicely on the floor, but it was just bobbling a little bit and he's hit it over the bar. But I thought we were terrific today. I thought we were really brave, really on the front foot. I thought we played some really nice stuff at times and, it all stands us in good stead."
The Seadogs are away at Hednesford Town, next Saturday.
