Parents and carers in North Yorkshire can now submit primary school applications for children starting in September 2027.
Applications for primary school places are now open for children preparing to start their education in North Yorkshire in September 2027.
Families and carers with children born between September 1, 2022, and August 31, 2023, can now begin the process of selecting their preferred educational settings.
The deadline to submit these primary applications is January 15, 2027. Education officials strongly advise parents to list up to five schools on their application forms, ranking them in order of preference.
Securing a preferred school remains highly likely for local families. A record ninety-six per cent of families in North Yorkshire successfully secured their first choice of primary school this year. This represents a one per cent increase compared to the ninety-five per cent success rate recorded last year.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for education, learning and skills, Councillor Annabel Wilkinson, said:
"We know that choosing the correct primary school for families is important, which is why we have included lots of information about the application process and details about the county’s schools on our website. For a child to be allocated a school place it is crucial that you make an application to the local authority where you live and the deadline to apply is January 15, 2027. If parents or carers apply after the deadline, this could affect the allocation of your child’s school place. Please remember, you still have to apply for a school place if your child is attending a nursery or has a sibling within the primary school you want them to go to."
School transport eligibility is another critical factor that parents are asked to take into account when finalising their school choices.
Under the current home-to-school travel policy, transport is provided to the nearest suitable school that has available places, provided the distance from the family's home address exceeds the statutory walking distance.
Officials have issued a specific reminder to parents regarding catchment areas. A designated catchment school for admissions purposes may not necessarily be classified as the nearest suitable school when calculating free travel eligibility.
Families can review the comprehensive eligibility criteria for home-to-school travel and utilize an online tool to identify the nearest school to their home address by visiting the local authority's transport website.
Once the application window closes, the allocated school places will be officially announced on National Offer Day, which is scheduled for April 16, 2027.
