Police Appeal As A64 Graffiti Appears

Police are appealing to members of the public in the Ryedale area to report offensive graffiti and to get in touch if they have helped to clean it up at locations along the A64.

Officers say they have received a number of reports of racist, sexual and misogynistic messages painted on bus-shelters, fences, junction boxes and buildings along a ten-mile stretch of the road between West Knapton and Staxton Hill.

These have happened sporadically over the past six months, although they have investigated a number of similar incidents over several years.

However, it’s believed that there are more incidences recently than Police are aware of as community-minded members of the public have cleaned the graffiti as soon as they’ve become aware of it, and in some cases, it has not been reported.

Officers say if you see any incidents of graffiti, or have any information about who is responsible, please report it to the police as soon as you can and take a photograph if possible.

We have included a sanitised photo of some of the least offensive graffiti. All of the messages are in similar writing.

You can report:

Online: Visit NYP website, select ‘Tell us about’, then choose ‘An existing case or report’ - link below in the comments.

Live chat: Available via NYP website, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

If you are unable to use these options, please call North Yorkshire Police on 101.

If you wish to remain anonymous, you can pass information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online via their website.

Please quote reference 12260078234 when passing on information.
