Plans For Reopening of Scarborough and Whitby Venues Outlined

Monday, 22 March 2021 11:44

By Carl Gavaghan, Local Democracy Reporter

Scarborough Borough Council has revealed more details about the reopening of some of its visitor attractions on the coast.

The borough authority is planning to bring the Scarborough Spa and Whitby Pavilion back into use when the coronavirus restrictions allow.

The council took back the running of the two venues in-house earlier this year after it agreed to a termination of its deal with a commercial partner which had been overseeing the operation of the Spa and Pavilion for a number of years.

The venues are currently closed though Whitby Pavilion is being used as a vaccination centre for residents in the north of the borough.

In its residents newsletter the authority has now laid out its plan for the reopening.

It said:

“Event and entertainment venues, Scarborough Spa and Whitby Pavilion, back under our management, are taking their first steps towards reopening.

“Following the government roadmap, Scarborough Spa will begin by reopening Farrer’s Bar and Restaurant on Saturday March 27.

“Initially opening for takeaways, external dining will follow from April 12 in a new extended outdoor area.

“It is hoped step four of the roadmap, no earlier than June 21, will allow the venue to reopen its entertainment areas at full capacity with the likes of Jimmy Carr, Francis Rossi, The Dreamboys, Showaddywaddy and a number of tribute shows already scheduled to perform this summer.

“Whitby Pavilion has announced details of a Covid-19 friendly pantomime of The Wizard of Oz on Friday June 4.”

It is hoped that internal dining can be available from Monday May 17 at the Spa whilst applying the rule of six/two household government rule for meeting inside.

Scarborough Spa’s Cliff Lift will also be back in action from Saturday April 17 will be initially open on weekends from 10am to 4pm.

Meanwhile revised dates for three acts at Scarborough Open Air Theatre this summer have been announced.

Leeds indie rock band, Kaiser Chiefs, will take centre stage on Sunday August 8, followed by Olly Murs on Friday August 27 and UB40, featuring Ali Campbell and Astro, the following night.

The UB40 concert had been scheduled to take place before the coronavirus restrictions are due to end on June 21.

Olly Murs and the Kaiser Chiefs had been due to play in July.
