In a move aimed at upgrading public seating while promoting sustainability, Pickering Town Council has announced the installation of recycled plastic benches across the town.
These innovative benches are designed to replace traditional timber seats, offering numerous benefits that align with environmental goals.
The new benches come with a 25-year guarantee, ensuring durability and longevity. According to the council, these seats are "quick drying," "easy to maintain," and "cheaper than traditional timber," making them a practical choice for public spaces. Each bench is made from approximately 2,000 recycled plastic bottles, contributing to waste reduction efforts.
"We think they look very smart and are much more robust than you would expect," a representative from the council stated, highlighting the aesthetic and functional advantages of the new benches.
Among the latest additions is a "Sloper" style seat installed on Middleton Road. This particular model is priced around £60 less than the typical benches previously purchased by the council and is designed to provide a more comfortable sitting position for users.
The council is eager to engage with the community regarding these new installations. "We would love to know what you think," they said, inviting feedback from residents. They are particularly interested in hearing from those who have used the new benches, asking questions such as:
- Do you find it comfortable?
- Would you like to see more of these types of seats?
The council emphasised their commitment to considering community input as they continue to enhance public amenities.
