Only 284 Electric Vehicles in Scarborough Borough

A lack of charging points is being cited as one of the reasons for the low take up.

Work to install more electric car charging points in the Scarborough Borough is set to continue in the new year.

The borough is providing a number of challenges with a large number of properties having no off street parking, making the installation of home charging points difficult.

Council Leader Steve Siddons thinks that one of the reasons that electric car take up in the borough is so low.

There are only 284 electric cars registered in the Scarborough Borough.

The borough council is working on a project to install communal charging points in public car parks.

Fylingdales Councillor Jane Mortimer wants to see them installed in as many places as possible across the borough.

The borough council is launching a trial of electric vehicle chargepoints in Council car parks in order to allow current electric vehicle owners to more easily charge in the Borough and promote the increased uptake of electric vehicles.

A report presented to the borough council's cabinet this month highlighted some of the challenges for electric vehicle take up in the borough.

"The UK Government’s Net Zero Strategy and Transport Decarbonisation Plan set out the vision that vehicles will increasingly be transitioned to electric vehicles (EVs) in order to combat climate change, including a ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2030.

The ideal vision of the UK Government is for the majority of EV charging to take place at home, largely overnight, with supplementary charging during large journeys, largely through an array of EV chargepoints along the major road network. However, there is an awareness that many homes do not have access to off-street parking to charge an EV, so there will also be required the provision of EV chargepoints along highways and in public car parks.

Out of the approximately 56,000 cars and vans registered in the Borough at present, only 284 were plug-in EVs or hybrids in summer 2021. This is an increase from 150 plug-in EVs or hybrids in summer 2020. It is inevitable that this number will continue to rise rapidly in the coming years in light of government action and market trends that are reducing the cost of EVs and increasing the variety of new and second-hand EVs available.

Public EV charging in the Borough is currently very limited. In Whitby, the only public chargepoint is at Aldi. In Scarborough, there are public chargepoints at Brunswick Centre, Tesco, and Lidl. A small number of hospitality businesses have chargepoints for customers. The Council has received a number of correspondences over the past months enquiring over the lack of EV charging provision for both residents and visitors.

The prevalence of traditional combustion engine car ownership is contributing to the large and stagnant carbon dioxide emissions associated with transport in the Borough, which contributes almost 40% of the Borough’s carbon footprint.

Recent consultancy work for North Yorkshire County Council has projected that 893 publicly available chargepoints will be needed across the County by 2025, of which 448 will need some element of public funding. Scarborough Borough is likely to require a disproportionately high  number of these due in part to the limited access to off-street parking."
