North Yorkshire Police: Most Crimes Down- Robbery Rockets But Why?

The force's deputy chief constable has addressed the latest crime figures released by North Yorkshire Police.

Scott Bisset says there has been a reduction overall:

" A good reduction in crime last year that we saw, which was very pleasing. That's the second year in a row we've seen a reduction in crime and we're on again this year to reduce it further. There's some healthy reductions in there. Bike theft, which tends to affect us. Robbery, in particular, at 61% above where we were last year, is problematic.

"Some of that has come about with a change in the recording practices on shoplifting. So, there was a change in how the Police were required to record shoplifting, which involved the use of force by the suspect, either in the course of stealing something or if they use force to get away when they've been challenged. So that will not now be recorded as a shop theft. It's recorded as a robbery."

The Deputy Chief Constable added that there are some scenarios particular to the Yorkshire Coast:

" One is young person on young person. I'll give you one example: A 7-year-old stealing a fiver off a 5-year-old- we are still obliged to record that as a robbery- up to drugs, users falling out with each other, and getting a conviction on that type of offending can be fairly challenging. The other thing I should mention is any robbery is not good, but in North Yorkshire the levels are relatively low, in terms of numbers compared nationally. So any increase shows quite a big percentage increase. These aren't your bank robberies. These are on street robbery and some organised crime opposing gangs robbing each other."
