North Yorkshire Police say with wintry weather forecast over the New Year period, drivers need to be prepared should road conditions become hazardous.
Officers suggest extra care should be taken, and urge motorists to follow these essential safety tips:
✅ Plan Ahead – Allow extra time for journeys and check weather and traffic updates before setting off
✅ Check Your Vehicle – Ensure tyres have adequate tread, lights are working, and your windscreen is clear – top up the screen wash and have ice scrapers and de-icer spray ready to use
✅ Pack Essentials – Carry warm clothing, a blanket, food, water, a flask of hot drink ideally, and a phone charger in case of delays or breakdowns.
✅ Slow Down – Ice, snow, and wet roads reduce grip. Drive at a speed that allows you to stop safely – keep your distance from vehicles in front
✅ Remember, even if your vehicle is 4WD, it’s still just four bits of rubber in contact with the ground when driving on icy roads. Please don’t be lulled into a false sense of confidence
✅ Stay Alert – Avoid distractions and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
If conditions are severe, consider very carefully whether your journey is essential.
If it isn’t, why put yourself and others at risk?
