A murder investigation is underway following the death of a man who was stabbed during an altercation on First Avenue in Bridlington early on Monday morning.
A man has died following a fatal stabbing outside a property in Bridlington, prompting police to launch a full murder investigation.
Life-threatening injuries were sustained by the victim during an altercation on First Avenue at around 5.20am on Monday, 10 August 2026.
The victim was transported to hospital for urgent medical treatment but sadly passed away despite the efforts of medical professionals, police confirmed.
A 24-year-old suspect is currently under arrest on suspicion of murder. Officers detained him nearby shortly after the incident, and he remains in hospital receiving treatment for minor injuries sustained during the altercation.
A knife has been recovered by officers as part of their extensive ongoing enquiries.
Major areas of Bridlington remain sealed off by police. Multiple scene guards are currently in place across Flamborough Road, First Avenue, and Alexandra Promenade while crime scene investigators examine the locations.
The two men involved are believed to be associated with one another, according to detectives. Formal identification of the victim is currently ongoing as officers work to locate and inform his next of kin.
An increased police presence will remain visible in the local community as the investigation progresses. Officers are asking residents to continue avoiding the cordoned areas where possible and to refrain from speculating about the circumstances of the incident.
Leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Leanne Murphy said:
"Since we received the report this morning, officers were immediately deployed and have been conducting extensive house to house, and CCTV enquiries, as well as obtaining witness statements to determine the full circumstances around the incident.
Whilst we are in the very early stages of our investigation, from our enquiries so far, we have established that an altercation is believed to have occurred between the two men, who are thought to be associated to one another, leading to one of the men being stabbed and taken to hospital for treatment to life threatening injuries.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, the man has since died in hospital, and enquiries remain ongoing to formally identify him, and therefore identify and locate his next of kin. We would ask people to please refrain from speculating around the circumstances surrounding the incident at this time.
A 24-year-old man was detained nearby shortly after we received the report and has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in hospital after also sustaining minor injuries as a result of the altercation.
A knife has also since been recovered as part of our enquiries so far.
I would like to thank members of the public who have already greatly assisted us in our enquiries and prompt arrest of a man in connection with the incident, and the local community can expect to continue to see an increased police presence in the area.
Multiple scene guards remain in place on Flamborough Road, First Avenue, and Alexandra Promenade, as our investigation continues and Crime Scene Investigations carry out their enquiries, and we would ask people to continue to avoid the area where possible.
I would encourage anyone else with information, concerns, dashcam or CCTV, to please come forward and speak to officers on the ground or contact us via our non-emergency number 101 quoting crime reference 26*112292."
