McCain Yorkshire Coast 10k Returns to Scarborough Today

The McCain Yorkshire Coast 10k is taking place in Scarborough today.

Over two thousand runners will be taking part in the main event with a number of fun runs also setting off from Scarborough Spa.

Alan Whelan From Scarborough Athletic Club says there are a number of changes to this year's event.

This year's 10K run starts at 09:45 with the 2.5km Fun Run at 11:30 and 1.6km run at 11:50.

Alan says they've done a lot of work to ensure this year's event is the most sustainable yet.

Every 10K runner has sponsored a UK tree being planted as part of their entry, the event's principle sponsor - McCain - have matched that with a further tree per 10k runner and a further 500 trees for the fun runners.

The 10K medals have been created from Welsh slate and the first 250 fun run finishers will receive  bio compostable medals that are impregnated with wild flower seeds and can be planted.

Race water is being provided by Proudfoots in bottles are made from recycled plastic. The bottles themselves can be reused and recycled. Scarborough Borough Council are providing recycling bins to collect the bottles for recycling

The lead car is electric by kind donation from Vantage KIA Scarborough

The main sponsor for the event is once again McCain Foods, they say:

"We are delighted to sponsor the 13th Yorkshire Coast 10k as part of our dedication to encouraging health & active lifestyles in the community. We’ve supported the event for the past 12 years and we’re proud that it’s grown into one of the countries favourite 10k’s. The Road Race and Family Fun Runs are welcoming of everyone no matter age or ability. We hope you have a fantastic experience and wish you all the best on race day."

All profits from the event will be donated to three local charities Saint Catherine's, the Rainbow Centre and Sash.

The 10k run will be started by Scarborough Cancer Survivor - Liam Critchett.

Race organisers asked This is the Coast listeners to nominate local inspirational people for the role of race starter.
