Plans are gathering pace for a historic milestone on the Yorkshire Coast as Scarborough prepares to celebrate 400 years since its official designation as a spa town.
The anniversary, marking four centuries since the 1626 discovery of mineral springs by Mrs Thomasin Farrer, is set to be commemorated with a major new heritage installation.
Councillor Rich Maw, an Independent member of the town council and North Yorkshire Council, has expressed his long-held passion for the project, which aims to celebrate the town’s journey from a seventeenth-century discovery to a modern conference and entertainment hub. Reflecting on the progress made, Councillor Maw stated:
"I've been looking forward to this for about 3 years. It's been difficult in some ways to get officer support and to get council support, but we're starting to get there. We're getting things over the line.
Really looking forward to the middle of the year. I think the core events program will probably be mid July, and at that point, we should have the unveiling of of rather a new feature at the spa there. And I'm hoping that the town will will be very well, I'm hoping they'll be delighted with it."
A focal point for the South Bay
The specific location for the permanent sculpture has now been confirmed, situated near the iconic Scarborough Spa complex. The site was chosen for its historical significance and its visibility to visitors across the bay. Councillor Maw provided a detailed description of where the new feature will be placed:
"So, as you're approaching the spa, if you're coming along the walkway there, you'll see the spa roundabout. Just beyond that, there's this rectangle at the moment, it looks like nothing, but if you were to dig away under there, you'll see the stairways going down into the spa pump room.
This sculpture of sorts, whichever one is is ultimately going to be placed on there, that will be where that is cited. You'll be able to see that from across the bay. So, if you're looking at across the bay from from South Bay, you'll be able to see this feature. It'll attract people along to the uh wondering what it is and it'll be this fantastic new feature to celebrate Scarborough's 400th anniversary as a tourist town."
Community and political landscape
The "Scarborough 400" initiative is supported by North Yorkshire Council and a dedicated steering group of local history enthusiasts. The project has secured financial backing from the Scarborough and Whitby Area Committee, and Scarborough Town Council.
The upcoming installation is expected to serve as a lasting legacy of the accidental discovery of bitter, russet-coloured waters that changed the course of the town's history four centuries ago.
