Somehow the two most generous defences in NPL Premier conjured up a goal-less draw on the Yorkshire Coast.
The impressive Lucas Barnes, on debut, missed a great chance for Whitby, seven minutes before half-time. The on-loan Harrogate Town midfielder saw his effort blocked after finding lots of space in the Brig box.
Four minutes before half-time, another golden chance, for the home side, saw Vinnie Steels whip a dangerous ball across the face of goal that was headed just wide.
The second half began as the first ended and Whitby skipper Stu Rose won a penalty after being upended in the area. The former Boro Rangers frontman got up to take the resulting spot kick, only to blaze over the bar.
More Whitby pressure saw Charlie Brier save well from Joey Phuthi.
Goalkeeper Oli Swan, on competitive debut for Whitby, saved with his legs late on to ensure a clean sheet for new Whitby manager Graeme Lee on his first match in charge, a marked difference to the 6-2 drubbing, from Gainsborough Trinity, at the same venue, four days earlier.
