Private investors will visit Scarborough on Bonfire Night to view regeneration opportunities ahead of the launch of the country's first coastal Mayoral Development Zone.
Private investors will visit Scarborough on fireworks night to explore major regeneration opportunities.
The visit on November 5th forms part of a drive to secure funding for town centre, housing, and harbour improvements. It follows a recent 'Scarborough Sparks' showcase held in Westminster, designed to highlight the area's potential to developers.
Millions of pounds could flow into the high street and local housing market when the town becomes the country's first coastal Mayoral Development Zone next month. Up to £8 million from an initial £10 million regeneration fund could be allocated to accelerate economic growth and tackle socio-economic challenges.
Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith explained the strategy behind bringing potential backers to the Yorkshire Coast.
"Alison Hume was very kindly to sponsor and and put an event down in Westminster where we showcased the opportunity of the MDZ. So things look looking at the station for example, the high street, the Brunswick centre, down into the pier and such like as well.
And then we've got a return leg of that coming up in November, where we're bringing those investors up here as well to really out outline those proposals.
I think it's really key and important to bring people to the area to show they can actually see the work.
That, from there is where we're going to get that funding coming through."
The local economy currently relies heavily on tourism and retail, which can leave residents with insecure, low-quality jobs. However, the area boasts a strong, yet often overlooked, industrial sector.
Scarborough's MP Alison Hume highlighted the importance of showcasing local expertise to secure private backing.
"This is a public private partnership and this is the way that we can get investment into our area.
We have a fantastic electrical engineering hub of experience. Schneider, Dale, UPC, and nobody knows about it, and I'm talking about it. We are an area of expertise, and that's why I've pushed the sparks as a theme.
We had the main kickoff in London, we're coming back to Scarborough on November the 5th, fireworks night. And bit of luck, they'll see the fireworks when all of these investors come."
The upcoming Mayoral Development Zone will provide a strategic framework to bring together developers, landowners, and local authorities. The aim is to overcome market failures such as low land values and high construction costs that currently deter private investment and leave key sites vacant.
The Mayoral Development Zone will officially launch in November, operating as a flexible, locally created delivery mechanism to provide investor confidence for the next phases of development on the Yorkshire Coast.
